Hello,
I had no idea NRAS had a forum on their site, this looks great. I actually joined because I am attending the NRAS roadshow in March and now I wish I'd become a member sooner! My name is Sophie and I'm 25 years old. I am a few months away from finishing my social work degree and I've started the scary process of looking for a job. I was diagnosed with RA in October 2009, which was a few months after the sudden onset of my symptoms
I've tried most of the DMARDs but my RA raged on and despite having seronegative RA, it appears to have been quite aggressive and left me with irreversible joint damage. I started my first anti TNF (cimzia) in August. It's worked miracles with my RA - put it in remission - but I've had horrendous side effects and it is now being discontinued which is very upsetting. I see my rheum in a few weeks and hopefully we can look at trying something else. I hope she won't suggest steroids because they turn me into a ravenous, angry, depressed insomniac!
I'm looking forward to meeting new people. It would be really good to chat to people around my age too.

Hello Sophie & welcome to the site There is a great wealth of knowledge and support here so your be looked after well I'm Louise, 40 with 2 children aged 9 and 7. I was diagnosed a year ago with RA and have been on an aggressive path of treatment. I'm currently in clinical remission but my medication and steroids are very high and about to be reduced so we will see how I react. Louise.

Hello Sophie and welcome. Sounds like you've had your fair share of ups and downs already - and such a tender age! Good luck with your studies and your job hunting. I smiled when I read your account of steroid effects - I've had exactly the same problem with that drug, although I'm still on it as my RA is not yet controlled. Anyway great to get to know you - keep posting. Gogs

Hi Sophie, and a warm welcome to the forum. It's a real shame you're having to stop the Cimzia when it's worked well for you. I hope they can come up with an alternative drug for you - there seem to be more out there now. I was diagnosed over 8 years ago, and my RA was rampant too, putting me in a wheelchair until I was prescribed Humira, which made a considerable difference to my quality of life. Hope to see you posting again, Kathleen x

Hi Sophie
Welcome to the forum but sorry for your diagnosis.
I am 41 with 2 boys of 8 and 10.
I was diagnosed a year ago and it's a lot to take on board.
Good luck with your degree and job hunting. I completely agree with you on the steroid front and bloody hated taking them.
Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on at your appt.
Take care.
Lisa

Hi Sophie and welcome! As has been said there is a wide range in age groups here with the one horrible thing in common I always think it is terrible that RA is no respecter of age and it's such a shame that you have been diagnosed so young. Hopefully you will find a treatment that suits you without side effects, soon. Wishing you every success with your job hunt and look forward to hearing more from you soon Julie x

hi Sophie,
welcome from me.
what a shame you had to stop Cimzia, but there are so many more choices of drugs now available than years ago. i am on an Anti-TFN.
good luck with finishing your degree, it's a hard world out there for young people nowadays job wise i know, but am sure your degree will open more doors for you.
i have never taken steroids fortunately, but know well the side affects by other members here.
keep posting and let us know how you are getting on,
Suzanne
